Lycopene is a sister
to beta carotene which is a precursor of vitamin- A.
Lycopene is a strong
antioxidant among common dietary carotenoids and fights against initiation
and promotion of atherosclerosis, cancer, cataract, arthritis and other
degenerative diseases caused due to excess oxidative stress.
Lycopene donates electrons
to quench and neutralize Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) before they damage
cells. Free radical oxygen molecules are thought to be the source of
aging.
Lycopene appears to
protect against cancer of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon,
rectum, prostate and cervix.
Sources includes
tomatoes and tomato products like tomato sauce, tomato paste and
ketchup, Pizza, RioRed Grapefruits, watermelon and Guava.
Our research results
shows that growing location has significant effect on the content of lycopene
and content decreases with the delay in harvest.
